The chloropasts, the structures containing the plant&#8217;s chlorophyll, are arranged in a distinctive helical pattern.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2925\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2925\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2925\" src=\"http:\/\/wakefieldnaturalists.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Volvox-and-Diatom-600-x-400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wakefieldnaturalists.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Volvox-and-Diatom-600-x-400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wakefieldnaturalists.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Volvox-and-Diatom-600-x-400-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wakefieldnaturalists.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Volvox-and-Diatom-600-x-400-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volvox and a Diatom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The samples that we looked at contained many diatoms. These are single-celled algae which have interesting geometric shapes. We also saw volvox. This is an alga that grows in spherical colonies. In the picture above, the spheres inside the large sphere are daughter colonies.
